Our Staff

Nearly 1,200 expert UF College of Medicine and community physicians along with more than 13,000 skilled Shands nursing and support staff provide comprehensive high-quality patient care, from primary care and family medicine to subspecialty tertiary and quaternary services for patients with highly complex medical conditions. The faculty from the UF College of Medicine includes nationally and internationally recognized physicians whose expertise is supported by intensive research activities. Shands’ affiliation with the UF Health Science Center allows patients to benefit from the latest medical knowledge and technology. Most services are supported by top notch administrative talent, of which the hospital could not function without.

Our Recognition

UF Health Shands Hospital is nationally distinguished, holding the #1 ranking for liver transplants and consistently earning top-50 placements in the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings. In the 2025-2026 report, the hospital was ranked in seven adult specialties: cancer (#39), ear, nose and throat (#47), geriatrics (#43), neurology and neurosurgery (#39), obstetrics and gynecology (#26), urology (#30), and pulmonology and lung surgery (#40), marking 16 consecutive years among the nation’s best. Cancer, cardiology and heart and vascular surgery, and gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery were rated “high-performing,” placing them in the top 10% nationally.

UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital is honored as one of the nation’s top children’s hospitals in the 2024-2025 U.S. News & World Report rankings. Our pediatric programs demonstrate exceptional care with rankings including pulmonology and lung surgery (#23), diabetes and endocrinology (#33), cardiology and heart surgery (#38), cancer (#49), and pediatric and adolescent behavioral health—top 50 nationally. The hospital is also verified as a Level 1 pediatric trauma center by the American College of Surgeons, one of fewer than 20 in the nation to earn this distinction, affirming our commitment to providing the highest level of emergency care for children with life-threatening injuries.

Additionally, UF Health Shands maintains a 4-star Quality and Accountability rating from Vizient and an “A” Hospital Safety grade from The Leapfrog Group.
